The disciples of Jesus' day were expected to be more righteous than the Pharisees. One of the key differences between some of the Pharisees and the disciples of Christ was their motivation for being righteous. One group sought to bring attention to themselves; the other sought to bring glory to God. Obviously, this wasn't true for every person in both categories, but it was a glaring difference between the two. Another reason why they could exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees is that they depended upon Jesus to fulfill the righteous requirement of the Law for them. They would be rewarded for their patience at their entrance into the kingdom of Heaven at the time of the destruction of the temple in AD70.
